To get started with meditation you actually need only one tool that you already possess: your breath.

However, there are several things you can do to help yourself getting into the right mood, and to prepare your meditation space. Here are some tips to help you with your practice.

Position

Depending on your personal needs and preferances, you can choose to either sit on a chair when you practice your meditation, or cross legged on a meditation cushion. Sitting on a chair might suit most westeners, while sitting on a cushion on the floor or on the bed is comfortable if you are more flexible. No matter which position you choose, make sure to keep your back straight. This helps the energy to flow, and keeps you from falling asleep. You might want to try out this japanese style meditation bench, which helps keeping a straight back and spine position.

Atmosphere

Light a candle! This creates a special atmosphere and feeling in the room, and attracts positive energies to come into your meditation space. Try it out for yourself, meditate both with and without lighting a candle, and observe the difference in how you feel.

I adore these lotus shaped candle holders, which come in all colours. Just pick your favourite shape and colour!

Incense is another helpful tool that can deepen your spiritual mood, and clean the energy in the room. You can either just use simple incense sticks, or you might prefer to use pure incense, which I personally love. In this case you’ll need a incense burner and a candle.

The illumination of the room is important as well, either you can go for just candles, or you can use a small salt lamp, which has a really warm, soft light.

If you sit on the floor, you might want to put your meditation cushion on a yoga mat or woolen blanket.

Music can help you get into a calm feeling. I love for example the soothing japanese flute music, or indian flute music. One of my yoga teachers once told me that different instruments influence different parts of your body, or chakras. Drums would energise your lower chakras, while guitar or violin music open your heart. Flute music works on your higher chakras. Try it out for yourself and see how you feel!

Mantras are short, repeated phrases that help your mind into a certain vibration. Browse youtube to find one that resonates with you. If you aren’t sure which one to use, go for the powerful OM.

Be creative and arrange your meditation space in a way that makes it inviting and a special place to be!
